Jefferson Community College is pleased to announce that David E. Elmer, Watertown, and Keri E. Nelson, Alexandria Bay, and have been named recipients of the State University of New York (SUNY) 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. This honor is bestowed upon students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.
Mr. Elmer, a graduate of Watertown High School, will graduate in May with an associate in science degree in liberal arts mathematics and science from Jefferson Community College. With his 4.0 grade point average, David has been named to the President’s List for each of the three semesters he has been enrolled at Jefferson and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. After graduation, David plans to transfer to SUNY Upstate Medical University and pursue a career in allied health. While at JCC, David has volunteered his time as a peer tutor with the Learning & Success Center and also assisted faculty with Super Science Saturday. In addition to being involved in the activities of his three daughters, David is a soloist with the Northern Choral Society, a member of the River Ringers Hand Bell Choir, and serves as chair of the Christian education committee at the First Presbyterian Church in Watertown where he is also a soloist with the church choir.
Ms. Nelson, a graduate of Alexandria Central School, is earning her associate of applied science degree in hospitality and tourism at JCC. She has been named to the President’s List for two semesters, the Dean’s List one semester, and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. Upon graduation in May, Keri plans to transfer to the Rochester Institute of Technology and pursue a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and service management. While at Jefferson, Keri has served as president of Student Government and as the student representative on the Jefferson Community College Board of Trustees. She is member and past vice president of the Hospitality Club, volunteered as a survey data collector for the Center for Community Studies and has helped organize shipments from JCC in support of the Adopt-A-Platoon program. In the community, Keri is a lay minister and lector at St. Cyril’s Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Elmer and Ms. Nelson were among 275 students from across all SUNY campuses honored April 7 at the SUNY Plaza in Albany, New York. Awards were presented by interim SUNY Chancellor John B. Clark. “This year’s recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence are among the most gifted and talented students in the entire SUNY system and I congratulate them, their families and the campuses for all their achievements,” said Dr. Clark.
