Super Science Saturday for Grades 5-8 at JCC - Feb. 9

Look no further for something educational and fun to do with the kids on a winter Saturday! The Science Division at Jefferson Community College (JCC) will host Super Science Saturday (SSS) on February 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Super Science Saturday is a celebration of math and science and an exploration of science careers with demonstrations designed for kids in 5th through 8th grades, although family members of all ages are welcome to attend. Admission is free.

JCC faculty, assisted by current students, will give demonstrations in animal management, chemistry, biology, geology, math, engineering and health-related careers. Interactive exhibits include crime scene investigation, live animals, ambulance tours, robotic-building challenges, cold light emissions, brain teasing puzzles, and measuring vital signs of the heart and lung. Students will have the opportunity to explore and see how much fun science can be by participating in hands-on demonstrations. Those who complete exhibit activities will be eligible to enter a drawing for an iPod and other great prizes.

Special SSS events include two “chemistry magic” shows presented by James Peploski of Clarkson University at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and an egg drop contest sponsored by the JCC engineering club to benefit the Sci-Tech Center of Watertown. The egg drop contest requires that contestants “get crackin” prior to SSS, interested students should email Mark Southcott at msouthcott0217@students.sunyjefferson.edu for instructions.

Additionally, several community organizations will be on hand to share career information with students. Exhibitors include: Guilfoyle Ambulance, Jefferson County Dog Control, Jefferson County Public Health, NYS Zoo at Thompson Park, Old McDonald’s Farm, the Sci-Tech Center and the Thousand Island Emergency Rescue Squad.

SSS will take place at JCC in the Jules Center and the Guthrie Science Building. Concessions, parking, a campus map and programs will be available at the event.
