Black River Review

Crazy Carnival Character

If my teenage rebellion had won,
I might have joined the carnival.
Lived from a
Windstar, 1987.
hard life, harboring hassles, looking haggard.
Drink it all away
Drink Mr. Daniels, smoke Dorals.
Find new boyfriends,
take what I can, give nothing back.
          Have a pet for companionship,
a mad, monstrous monkey maybe.
It would smell,
just like everything else ‘round here.
I would eat food smothered in oil,
I would be a greasy person myself.
          I’m glad, I think,
that I don’t stink.
I’m glad I didn’t join the carnival.
