Summer’s Curtain Call

hummingbirds grace
potted petunias placed
on our patio to entice
them into our view
their effervescent beating
casting brilliant prisms
to the constant shrill
of cicadas filling
the sultry air
last light of day casts
longer shadows
then twilight wins
I swallow a lingering gulp
of these magnificent birds
the swelling sounds
of acres of insects
and wrap
myself in the warmth
of summer’s last rave
