Academic Advisement

Academic advising is one of the most important services available to you as a student at JCC. Academic advisors are here to help you achieve academic and personal success, stay on track with your degree requirements, and keep you well informed of academic policies that apply to you.

Advisors Can Help You:

  • Understand how academic programs can meet your career and academic goals
  • Identify program requirements and plan appropriate course schedules
  • Make changes in class schedules
  • Be informed about academic policies and important deadlines
  • With academic issues that may arise
  • Connect with appropriate campus resources (Tutoring, Career, Transfer, Personal Counseling, etc.)

Who is My Advisor?

Your initial advising session will be scheduled through the Advising, Career and Transfer Center (ACTC).  Most full-time degree-seeking students are assigned to a faculty advisor in their program of study, early in their first semester. Other students may be assigned to advisors in our Advising, Career and Transfer Center, Continuing Education Office, Fort Drum Education Center or the STAR office.

Your advisor is listed in MyJCC, login, then click Deeplinks/Quicklinks, Who’s My Advisor.

Your Advisor Should:

  • Be available during office hours and by appointment
  • Provide direction for program progress toward your career/educational goals
  • Provide relevant, current academic information
  • Refer you for assistance in solving academic or personal problems

Your Responsibilities:

Ultimately, you are responsible for achieving your educational and career goals.  To ensure your success you are expected to:

  • Actively explore educational and career options
  • Establish realistic educational and career goals
  • Be informed about degree and transfer requirements
  • Take responsibility for your decisions
  • Meet with your advisor as necessary to ensure you are progressing appropriately
  • Schedule appointments with your advisor and keep those appointments
