JCC and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) have collaborated to offer workshops each semester that span topics relevant to any emerging business. Participants in the E/SB certificate need only to complete two core offerings and three additional workshops of their choosing.  E/SB workshops are identified by an asterisk.

Allied Health Training Series

Clinical Medical Assistant

This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.  Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle.  Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands on labs and a 160 hour clinical externship.  Note:  Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.

Dental Assisting

The 60 hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – Dental Assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice.  This course covers the following key areas and topics – Administrative Aspects include: the history of dentistry and dental assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry; policies and guidelines.  Clinical Aspects include: introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment, introduction to tooth structure; primary and permanent teeth; the oral cavity and related structures; proper patient positioning; dental hand-pieces; sterilization; and other areas.  In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program.

Home Healthcare Aide

This 80 hour comprehensive program prepares students for a position as a Home Healthcare Aide.  Emphasis is on giving personal care in a client's home, communications, working with ill persons, basic human needs, eldercare, nutrition, special diets, and home management.  In addition to the responsibilities of a Home Healthcare Aide, this program will prepare students to sit for the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (or the “NAHC”) “Home Care Aide Certification” examination through the NAHC’s Homecare University Program.   This NAHC program is composed of three competency-based elements: training, skills demonstration, and a written examination.

Pharmacy Technician

This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings - working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the PTCB exam.

Phlebotomy Technician

The 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.   Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipuncture completely and safely.  Classroom work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.   The program also includes lab exercises, live blood draws, work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare students to function as an entry level Phlebotomy Technician. NOTE:  This 90 hour program does not include the arranging of a free clinical rotation on behalf of students.  Although not required to work as a Phlebotomy Technician, students that wish to pursue a clinical rotation should contact local health care organizations to arrange their personal clinical schedule.

Medical Billing and Coding Program 

This combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.  The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements.  Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS).   After obtaining the practical work experience (6months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)  - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams. This eight-hour training will prepare your restaurant operation to meet the new state mandated training requirements for foodservice personnel. This workshop will empower employees with the knowledge and skills they need to prepare and serve foods safely.  The tuition covers the cost of the ServSafe Essentials textbook, exam, and proctoring of the exam. Choose one day that works best for your schedule. The test is taken during the final 90-minutes of the course. Those who need to retake the exam should register for the “exam only” portion of the workshop.

Pre-Licensing Courses

Handgun Safety & Pistol Permit Training

Learn important information about permit requirements and your legal responsibilities in owning a handgun. Topics to be covered are related to New York State Penal Law, General Safety Topics, and Firearms Proficiency using Jefferson’s Advanced Interactive Systems (AIS) Firearms Simulator. This is the same simulator used in the criminal justice degree program. Jefferson Community College Policy prohibits all weapons on campus. Handgun safety and pistol permit training will be held the first and third Saturday of every month at Jefferson Community College. This self-paced online course will prepare you for the NCCA accredited, nationally recognized Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Exam provided by the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) Board for Certification. The course bridges the gap between exercise science related coursework and the practical application skills required for personal training. Workshop Registration Information

Registration for the pre-certification workshops above are through the Continuing Education Division  (Room E-100 of the Extended Learning Center, 315-786-2233.) Workshops require a minimum number of participants in order to run. If a workshop is canceled due to insufficient enrollment you will be notified 5-days prior to the start of the workshop and a refund will be issued.

Payment is required at the time of registration. We accept credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover), personal checks and cash. Refunds will not be issued after the start of the workshop.

Workshop Discounts

Members of AUSA, CSEA, Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Watertown Jaycees, as well as, Members of the Jefferson Community College Alumni Association, are entitled to a $5.00 discount off any non-credit workshop. Proof of membership is required.
