What is a matriculated student?

A matriculated student is one who has formally applied and has been accepted into a degree or certificate program. ONLY matriculated students may be eligible to receive financial aid and be awarded a certificate or degree.

What is the difference between full-time and part-time study?

The number of credits a student takes each semester determines full-time and part-time study. Full-time students are enrolled in 12 credits or more; part-time students are enrolled in fewer than 12 credits.

Is financial aid available to part-time student?

Financial aid is available for eligible students who have been formally accepted to a degree or certificate program. Student must be enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours per semester.

What is the difference between an A.S. and an A.A.S. degree?

A.S degrees are designed to prepare a student for transfer into a bachelor’s degree program at a 4-year institution. An A.A.S. degree prepares students for employment.

What if I am uncertain about my program choice?

If you are uncertain, JCC offers a special program for the undecided student. An Admissions counselor can assist you by reviewing programs and options.

How can I obtain and Admissions application? It is easy! Apply online or download the free Jefferson Community College application (PDF), call 315-786-2277 to have one sent to you, or pick up one in the Admissions Office (room 6-007, Jules Center) or your local high school guidance office.

When should I apply?

If you plan to attend in the fall, applying the previous spring would be best. It is recommended you apply early to have the best opportunity to select the courses and times you want.

Can you help me with my application?

Yes! Feel free to contact the Admissions Office (315-786-2277). Our staff will be happy to help with the process and paperwork.

When I apply for admissions, how soon will I hear from Jefferson Community College?

We have a rolling admissions program and respond to each application when it is received. Once your application is complete, you are typically notified of admission within 48 hours.

Do I need to teak the assessment test?

A determination is made once Admissions receives your high school and college transcripts. The goal of assessment testing is to give each student the best start!

Is it OK if I don’t have ACT or SAT scores?

JCC does not require ACT or SAT scores. However, we do encourage students currently enrolled in high school to take the ACT or SAT as recommended by their counselor.

What is advisement and registration?

Once you have been accepted into a particular program, you can register at our Advising Center. (315-786-2478, room 6-120, Jules Center) You and your advisor discuss academic and career plans and then formally register for classes. Registration involved the actual signing up for classes for the upcoming semester.

When can I register for courses?

Registration for each semester is personally scheduled once the application is complete. Advising begins in April for the fall semester.

I’ve been out of school for 15 years: Do I need my high school transcripts?

Yes. The admissions process requires verification of high school graduation. If providing this documentation is a problem, call Admissions, 315-786-2277, so we can discuss a solution.

I want to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Will my Jefferson Community College credits transfer to a college or university offering a bachelor’s degree?

The academic credits you earn at Jefferson will transfer to many colleges or universities in the United States. In addition, we have transfer agreements with SUNY Colleges and many private colleges. Transfer (articulation) agreements mean that you’re provided the best advisement and opportunities for successful transfer.

Can I transfer my courses anywhere?

Yes, with few exceptions. Most colleges will not accept D’s or remedial courses. JCC successfully transfers coursework through the state, country and world.

I don’t know what kind of job I’d like after JCC. Can I still apply?

Absolutely. JCC offers comprehensive career counseling to help with these kinds of decisions. Also, our undecided student program allows you the option to explore.

How do I turn my military training into college credits?

Military training will be evaluated for college credit as soon as an official military transcript is received and the admission to a program is approved.

I’m an older student and have a four-year-old daughter. Is there any child care on campus?

Jefferson offers a fully accredited child care program on campus. The center operates during the day and accepts children 18 months of age and older. Call 315-786-2357 for details.

Are there campus tours?

Yes! Tours are available upon request. JCC also offers an opportunity for students to shadow classes for the day. For information, call 315-786-2277.

How far are you from Fort Drum?

Fort Drum is approximately 10 miles from JCC. However, much of the available 801 housing is closer. JCC offers a full range of courses at Fort Drum for soldiers and their families.

If I am not a U.S. citizen, how much will it cost to attend Jefferson Community College?

Estimated annual educational and living expenses associated with attending JCC in U.S. $14,399. You are required to submit certified documentation, dated within 6 months of application, showing financial support equal to or greater than to this amount.

Is Financial Aid available for International Students?

No. International students are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Can International Students work while attending college?

Students entering with an F-1 visa are not allowed to work on-campus or off-campus during their first year of study. Under special circumstances, it may be possible to seek employment after the first year of study.
