The Health & Wellness Center at JCC provides short-term personal counseling at no cost for Jefferson students. Counselor Katy Troester-Trate is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
The benefits of counseling can include:

- Enhanced interpersonal relationships
Sometimes counseling is difficult in that discussing personal problems can be upsetting. Changing unsatisfactory aspects of your life may affect the nature of your relationships with others. However, most people find that the benefits of counseling outweigh the risks. We will work together to resolve difficulties that may arise during the course of counseling. Also, we can discuss the value of including additional services, such as a psychiatric referral, referral for longer term counseling, and/or collaborating with other health care providers and/or referral services.
To schedule an appointment, please call the Health & Wellness Center at 315-786-2376. Appointments are recommended, however if you need immediate assistance, please visit the Health & Wellness Center in the Room 104A of the McVean Student Center (Building #4).
In the event of an emergency and you are on campus, you may call the Campus Safety & Security Office at 315-786-2222 (dial ext. 2222 from on campus phones) during and after business hours. For an off-campus emergency, please call 911 or Crisis Response at 315-782-2327.
The counseling provided at JCC is designed to be short-term. If you are in need of more long term counseling/services, a referral to a community setting will be made. Once outside services are in place, you may only see the Counselor for emergency situations.
Please note: the Health and Wellness Center does not provide psychiatric services, but can recommend assistance in the community.
Confidentiality is extremely important and information shared by you in a counseling session will be kept in strict confidence. Your personal information will not be disclosed outside counseling without your written permission. Counseling files are NOT part of academic records. However, there are some situations in which we are legally obligated to take action to protect others from harm, and this may include disclosure of some personal information.
The exceptions to confidentiality are extremely rare. If they should occur, it is the Center's policy that, whenever possible, we will discuss with you any action that is being considered. It is important that if you have any questions about this now or at a later date that we discuss these.
Use of Email: Because of our concerns about confidentiality, it is our policy to limit e-mail communications to scheduling concerns. We cannot guarantee the privacy of e-mail communications, and so request that you do not use e-mail for personal concerns.

JCC Campus Walk
Suicide claimed 41,149 lives in 2013 in the United States alone, with someone dying by suicide every 12.8 minutes. A suicide attempt is made every minute of every day, resulting in nearly one million attempts made annually.
When you walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walks, you join efforts with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives. The walks raise awareness about depression and suicide, and provide comfort and assistance to those who have lost someone to suicide.
