Discover basic structural shapes! You will design, build and load test your own model truss bridge made of balsa and basswood sticks. Teams will also build a truss bridge outdoors and have fun competing against other teams to solve engineering challenges. Engineering 102 (Grades6-8)August 02, 2017 - August 03, 2017

What do engineers do? Why are they here? How come they get to play with cool stuff? Kids start with an overview on the careers, and solve project based challenges involving structures, electricity, and material properties. Students then use some of these skills to program and design robots using LEGO NXT Robot kits. Sensor design, motor applications, and mechanical advantage will be explored. Prerequisite: Students must be nominated by their school to attend; and must have a strong interest in science, technology, computers and/or mathematics. To request a nomination form, call 786-2233.

Discover how rockets fly! You will design, build, test and fly your own model rocket. We’ll use Rocksim, rocket simulation software, to predict how your rocket will perform. Explore the surprising variety of simple machines people use every day and the pros and cons of assembly lines compared to making things by hand, then measure the force it takes to complete a task with and without a simple machine to help. Finally, put your data to the test, combining a series of simple machines to create an assembly-line subsystem for a model potato chip factory.

Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.
