Jefferson Community College (JCC) has served associate degree seeking students for over 40 years and has a long and distinguished history of serving the specific educational needs of military students. The College recognizes the unique nature of the military lifestyle and has been a SOCAD college since 1985. We are committed to easing the transfer of relevant course credits, providing flexible academic residency requirements, and crediting learning from appropriate military training. We have offered flexible programming to military students, both on-campus and on post at nearby Ft. Drum, NY, home of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, L.I., for many years. Becoming an eArmyU education partner allows us to continue to serve the changing needs of today's soldier. We are committed to helping you achieve your educational goals. In light of several measures, JCC has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence. On the 2000 SUNY/American College Testing (ACT) survey taken once every three years to measure student satisfaction at all 30 SUNY community colleges, JCC ranked 1st of 30 for "overall impression of the quality of education at this College." On several specific criterion measures, JCC also ranked 1st of 30, including "transfer of course credits," "preparation for further academic study," and "preparation for life-long learning." JCC was rated 3rd of 30 (and 1st among the 12 community colleges most like ourselves) for having a "challenging academic program", for "quality of instruction", and for "instructor availability." JCC was also rated 2nd of 30 (and 1st of the 12 colleges most similar to us) for "intellectual growth" and for "preparation for career." In the first-ever SUNY/ACT Alumni Outcomes Survey conducted in 1998-99, the mean responses by JCC alumni regarding quality of instruction in the major department and outside the major department were 4.29 and 4.02, respectively, on a 5-point scale where 5 = very satisfied. Outcomes assessment of the College's associate degree programs, conducted once every five years, indicate that JCC graduates are successful in their baccalaureate programs, with over 70% of respondents in a recent cycle of graduate surveys indicating they had maintained an GPA of 3.0 or better at their transfer institution. In terms of its online coursework, in particular, The College also has a growing reputation for excellence. JCC's online coursework is conducted with the SUNY Learning Network's (SLN) course management system. SLN, itself a national leader for online instruction and an award winner from the Sloan Foundation for its faculty training program, views Jefferson's online coursework very positively and has identified the instructional design of one of JCC's faculty as a model for SLN faculty state-wide to follow. In addition Jefferson is an experienced provider of distance learning. We currently offer 37 courses and 6 degrees that can be completed entirely online. New courses are added every semester. JCC does not use proctored testing within a course. You never have to go to a physical location to take a test as part of a JCC course. JCC courses do not require synchronous communication (you never have to be online at the same time that someone else is online). Every aspect of these courses is done asynchronously and online. |
