To avoid contracting or spreading the influenza, the College urges all members of the campus community to follow the good health practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stay healthy:

  • Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection we have against flu. Seasonal flu vaccine and initial doses of 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine are available now.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
  • Stay informed. The CDC website will be updated regularly as information becomes available.

Any persons with concerns about their health or symptoms should contact their health care provider immediately. The College Nurse is available during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, by calling 315-786-2247.

For more information on H1N1 influenza, call the NYS Department of Health toll-free, 24-hour hotline at 1-800-808-1987. Assistance and information are also available by calling Jefferson County Public Health at 786-3720, St. Lawrence County Public Health at 386-2325, Lewis County Public Health at 376-5453, the CDC at 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636), or by visiting the CDC’s flu website.

At this time, students, faculty, and staff who are NOT sick can safely come to class and to work. We are working closely with the Jefferson County Public Health and will keep you updated with important information regarding the current flu conditions via the College’s website, Blackboard, email and the bulletin board.
