Soldiers and Military Families
Jefferson Community College offers many opportunities for soldiers and their families. JCC is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), eArmyU/GoArmyEd, and offers many flexible options for taking courses (go to SOAR to see our course schedule).
In addition to coursework, JCC offers workshops and seminars for business, personal growth and fun for children and adults. There are many clubs, including one for Military Loved Ones as well as social and cultural opportunities. Events open to the public are list on our campus calendar.
Jefferson Community College has been designated as an institutional member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), a group of over 1000 colleges and universities providing voluntary postsecondary education to members of the military throughout the world. As a SOC member, Jefferson Community College recognizes the unique nature of the military lifestyle and has committed itself to easing the transfer of relevant course credits, providing flexible academic residency requirements, and crediting learning from appropriate military training. SOC has been developed jointly by educational representatives of each of the Armed Services, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and a consortium of thirteen leading national higher education associations. It is sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
GoArmyEd/eArmyU
In December 2002, Jefferson was officially named an education provider for eArmyU, an innovative program of online learning designed to provide active duty soldiers with high quality, flexible opportunities for study in higher education. JCC first enrolled soldier-students in eArmyU coursework in summer 2003 and currently offers five degrees through the eArmyU program--Business Administration A.S.; Individual Studies A.A., A.A.S., and A.S.; and Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities and Social Sciences A.A.
All soldiers will use the GoArmyEd portal to request tuition assistance and enroll in all classes (both online and classroom courses). The primary difference between eArmyU and other GoArmyEd classes is that the eArmyU classes are delivered entirely online.
See the JCC eArmyU pages for additional information about Jefferson’s eArmyU offerings.
Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Army Degree Program
In 1985, Jefferson Community College became a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Army Degree program (SOCAD). SOCAD is a worldwide system composed of an ever-growing number of colleges united together to form a network designed to facilitate the education of servicemembers.
As a SOCAD College serving the educational needs of servicemembers at Fort Drum, Jefferson Community College commits itself to criteria and requirements defined in the College’s formal SOCAD Agreement. The College agrees to require no more than twenty-five percent of approved SOCAD degree programs in residence, guarantees transfer among colleges in the SOCAD network, completes an official evaluation for each student enrolled, and accepts appropriate credit for non-traditional programs and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) experience as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE Guide).

Military Service School and Occupational Specialties
Military training and experiences are evaluated for college credit by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the ACE credit recommendations are listed on a soldier’s AARTS Transcript (Army-American Council on Education Registry Transcript Service). Soldiers applying for admission to Jefferson Community College should order an official AARTS Transcript to be sent to JCC.
Ordering an Official AARTS Transcript
Jefferson Community College awards the maximum about of credit for military training and experiences based upon the ACE credit recommendations. Credits for military training and experience can provide soldiers with advanced standing in their degree programs. (Note: Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard have similar transcripts listing respective training and experience along with ACE credit recommendations. JCC also accepts Community College of the Air Force credits).
Official Army AARTS and other military service transcripts need to be sent directly to the Admissions Office. Once the student is accepted for admission into a degree program, the transcripts along with any other official college transcripts will be evaluated.
Credit by Examination
College credit and advanced standing in a degree program may be granted for passing examinations from several nationally recognized examination programs.
Official transcripts can be sent to the Admissions Office from the following programs:
- The Excelsior College Examination (RCE)
- The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Board
- DANTES Subject Standards Tests (DSST)
- Advance Placement (AP) exams of the College Board
