JCC to offer Clinical Medical Assistant & Dental Assisting Courses in Spring 2013
Jefferson Community College (JCC) Continuing Education Division in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International (CCI) will offer a Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) Program and a Dental Assisting Program beginning in Spring 2013. Classes will be held during evenings at the Fort Drum Education Center Annex, 10450 5th Armored Division Drive.
The Clinical Medical Assistant Program is a 20-week program with classes held Tuesday and Thursday evenings, March 19 thru August 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Fort Drum. The course will prepare students to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant National examination and begin work in the healthcare field.
During the program, students will earn 140 hours of classroom lecture, 160 hours of clinical externship and hands-on lab experience. Topics to be covered include how to assist physicians by preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects about phlebotomy and pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology and the legal aspects of healthcare.
Tuition, including textbooks, is $2399. Prospective students can learn more about the program and pick up an application at an information session held at JCC on January 23 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 6-002, Jules Center. The deadline to apply is February 14, 2013.
The Dental Assisting Program consists of 60 hours of instruction and prepares students for entry level positions in the field of dentistry or a formal dental hygienist program. Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings, April 15 through June 12, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Fort Drum Education Center Annex.
Topics to be covered include the history of dentistry and dental assisting, legal aspects of dentistry, policies and guidelines, oral anatomy, dental operatory, dental equipment, tooth structure, primary and permanent teeth, the oral cavity and related structures, sterilization and other areas.
Upon completion, students will be familiar with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and acquire the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice. Additionally, students will be prepared to take the Dental Assisting National Board Radiology Health and Safety Examination administered at Pearson Vue testing centers.
The cost is $1199 for tuition and textbooks. An application is not required to enroll.
