New AmeriCorps VISTA Veterans Services Coordinator at JCC

Jefferson Community College announces that Dwight J. Doane, of Springfield, Virginia, has been appointed VISTA veterans services coordinator at Jefferson through a grant awarded by the New York Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Program.  As a VISTA employee located at Jefferson Community College, Doane will develop and coordinate activities, events and materials in support of veterans in the College’s service area which includes Jefferson and Lewis counties.

In his role at Jefferson, Dwight will collaborate with community organizations and veterans to address unmet needs and services, provide resources and support to enable veterans to reach their education and career goals, and develop College resources to further enhance a veteran-friendly learning environment.  Since joining Jefferson in September, Dwight has become advisor to the College’s veterans club and begun outreach to Jefferson’s 300+ veteran students.

Doane is originally from Watertown and is a graduate of Watertown High School. He holds a bachelor of business administration (B.B.A.) degree from Western New England College in Massachusetts.   After a 20-year career in the U.S. Army, Doane has spent the last 12 years in the private sector in program management capacities for companies that provide support services to the military in the areas of quality assurance, testing of government systems and military logistics.

In Virginia, Doane was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degrees of the Knights of Columbus and First Vice Commander of his local American Legion. He recently volunteered to organize and execute a job fair for veterans at the American Legion that was attended by more than 150 veterans and their spouses. Topics at the job fair included interview skills, resume writing, translating military service into civilian job lingo and job search skills.

“Dwight has a very clear personal passion for working with veterans,” said Jill M. Pippin, dean for continuing education at Jefferson Community College. “He is a 20 year active duty veteran himself, has grown up in a family full of veterans and currently has 3 children in the military. He wants to give back to veterans, especially those in his hometown of Watertown.”

Jefferson Community College was awarded the 3-year grant in March of 2012.   The VISTA veterans services coordinator position is appointed annually. Doane’s appointment is effective through August 31, 2013.

About AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America)

AmeriCorps VISTA is one of many national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).  For over 40 years, it has been at the forefront of building capacity of communities to fight poverty.  VISTA members devote a year of their lives to challenge poverty’s root causes. They achieve this by mobilizing volunteers and local resources and by increasing the capacity of individuals in low-income neighborhoods to rely on themselves to make positive changes.  Although nationwide most VISTAs serve in human service agencies, Campus Compact has pioneered the use of this resource to enhance civic engagement in higher education.
