JCC Commencement to be held May 17
Jefferson Community College will hold its 49th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the McVean Student Center Gymnasium. The commencement exercises will be video-streamed through the College’s website, www.sunyjefferson.edu, beginning at 6:45 p.m. A reception for graduates and guests will be held in the Jules Center Commons immediately following the ceremony.
The College is privileged that distinguished alumnus Stephen H. Can, class of 1980, will give the keynote address at the commencement exercises. Mr. Can, of New Hope, Pennsylvania, is a managing director with Credit Suisse based in New York. That same evening, Mr. Can will receive the 2013 Jefferson Citation from the JCC Board of Trustees and college president Carole A. McCoy.
Mr. Can received an associate of science degree in business administration from Jefferson before transferring to the State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh where he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s of arts degree in accounting. In 1984, he earned a master’s of science degree in finance with honors from the Krannert Business School at Purdue University where he was also named outstanding graduate instructor. Mr. Can subsequently earned Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.), Certified Management Accountant (C.M.A.) and Certified Financial Manager (C.F.M.) credentials.
Mr. Can was recognized by the JCC Alumni Association in 2004 with the Professional Achievement Award for distinguishing himself in his professional career. He is the founding managing director and Global Fund Co-Head for Credit Suisse's exclusive secondary private equity business, Strategic Partners, with over $11 billion committed under management. Previously, Mr. Can worked at IBM in several domestic and international finance positions including senior investment manager at IBM Pension Funds where he co-managed an $8 billion private investment portfolio.
In 2007, Mr. Can established the Jefferson-Can Scholars Program, creating a one-year, full-tuition, merit scholarship for first-year JCC students who graduated in the top 15% of their respective classes from high schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties. His gift has enabled 277 students to attend Jefferson Community College since 2008. The gift also established the Dr. David Walton Tutors Program, which provides support for Jefferson’s peer tutoring and supplemental instruction programs.
It is anticipated that approximately 600 graduates in the class of 2013 will be awarded degrees or certificates. Tickets are required for admission to the gymnasium and each student who is participating in the ceremony has received up to four tickets for guest seating in the bleachers. Students seeking additional tickets and those who have tickets to share can post a notice on the Ticket Share link located under Commencement Informationon JCC’s website, www.sunyjefferson.edu. The ceremony will be simulcast in the air-conditioned Sturtz Theater and tickets are not required for entrance to the Sturtz Theater.
Guest entrance doors, adjacent to Parking Lot D, will open at 6:30 p.m. and handicapped and special needs guests may disembark at this entrance.
Free childcare is available during the commencement ceremony and reception for children (ages 18 months to 12 years) of participants and their guests. Registration is required by calling Jefferson Campus Care at 315-786-2357 by noon on May 15.
