JCC to host Fireground Size-Up Seminar on Apr. 20

Fire, rescue and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel won’t want to miss this opportunity for free training on fireground size-up. Training is part of the Garrett Loomis Fire Safety and Educational Series hosted by Jefferson Community College (JCC). The Fireground Size-Up Seminar will be held on Saturday, April 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater, McVean Center. Registration is free and open to emergency personnel of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oswego, Onondaga and Oneida Counties.

The 4-hour seminar will teach attendees about the size-up process used to assist fire fighters in gathering information to make efficient, effective, and safe decisions on the scene of a fire. “It is my hope that each member takes home some knowledge and information that every situation we face in the emergency services field is dynamic,” says Captain T.G. Kolb of the Watertown Fire Department and adjunct instructor of JCC’s Fire Protection Technology Program. “It is very important we are aware of the possibilities of what could happen or the potential of something so routine turning into something so devastating.” The seminar will cover fifteen items identified as size-up points - construction concerns, occupancy, apparatus and staffing, life hazard, terrain, water supply, auxiliary appliances and aides, street conditions, weather, exposures, area, location and extent of fire, time, height and special considerations will be covered.

Michael A. Terpak will conduct the seminar.  Terpak is author of Fireground Size-up (2002) and Assessment Center Strategy and Tactics (2008) and co-author of Fireground Operational Guides (2011). Terpak, a 36-year veteran of fire service, currently serves on the Jersey City Fire Department and holds the rank of Deputy Chief and city-wide tour Commander. Founder of a New Jersey based consulting firm, Promotional Prep, Terpak prepares fire fighters and officers for promotional exams. Formerly responsible for New Jersey’s training division, he shares his expertise and experience with fire fighters around the country delivering lectures on fire and rescue related topics.

To register for the Fireground Size-Up seminar or for more information, email Captain T.G. Kolb at tkolb@sunyjefferson.edu. There is no deadline to register.

Sponsored by the JCC Fire Protection Technology Program.

The seminar is part of the Garrett Loomis Fire Safety and Educational Series made possible through the Northern New York Community Foundation and the Garrett Loomis Fund. Loomis was the Assistant Fire Chief of the Sackets Harbor Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Firefighters Local F-105 Fort Drum Fire and Emergency Services when he died in April 2010 on the scene of a silo fire.
