Jefferson Joint Recipient of Two SUNY Awards

State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher recently awarded SUNY Canton and Jefferson Community College more than $1 million for two initiatives aimed at increasing enrollment.

“We are absolutely delighted that our Transitioning Veterans from Boots to Books and Beyond (VB3) proposal developed in partnership with SUNY Canton has received funding support from SUNY,” said Carole A. McCoy, president of Jefferson Community College.  “We have over 500 veterans enrolled at Jefferson and we understand that the transition from the military life style to an academic environment can pose challenges.  This grant will give the veterans services offices at both campuses the ability to provide enhanced support tailored specifically for veterans, ultimately helping our veteran students persist and achieve their goal of completing a college degree.”

Additionally, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher awarded SUNY Oswego and Jefferson Community College a SUNY Excels grant to formalize an existing Oswego and Jefferson Community College initiative called “Start Now.”

“The Start Now model, piloted this past year, provides a structured pathway for students in New York City to achieve their educational goals,” said President McCoy. “In partnership with SUNY Oswego, Jefferson will assist students in developing the skills that will help them be successful and complete a college degree. With a strong mentoring, advising and academic support network, students who start at Jefferson and transfer to Oswego will do so with a stronger level of confidence and academic ability.”
