Statement on Hoverboard and Similar Devices

Effective January 15, 2016

Jefferson Community College prohibits self-balancing scooters, more popularly known as hoverboards, along with battery operated scooters and hands-free Segways on campus due to recent concerns by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the potential impact these devices may have on campus safety.  This response is part of the College's ongoing efforts to maintain a safe living, learning and working environment and campus community that is free from recognized hazards to operators and bystanders.

There are several safety and consumer agencies currently investigating fires and injuries related to these devices.  Once investigations have been completed, the College will re-evaluate its stance on these devices.

If you own a self-balancing scooter, battery operated scooter or hands-free Segway, please make sure the device is not brought to campus and specifically to East Hall when returning from winter break.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Wes Hissong, Director of Campus Safety & Security
Bruce Alexander, Director of Facilities
