JCC to hold 52nd Commencement on May 20, 2016

Jefferson Community College (JCC) will hold its 52nd annual spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the McVean Student Center Gymnasium. Approximately 447 students are candidates for May and August 2016 graduation with nearly 464 diplomas and certificates to be conferred. 

The College is honored that JCC alumna Dr. Carla B. Overton, pediatrician at Trust Pediatrics and associate professor of pediatrics with Golisano Children’s Hospital and Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, will give the keynote address at the commencement exercises. 

Tickets are required for admission to the gymnasium and each student who is participating in the ceremony has received up to four tickets for guest seating in the bleachers. Tickets are not required for entrance to the Sturtz Theater where the ceremony will be simulcast. In addition, the commencement exercises will be video-streamed through the College’s website,, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Guest entrance doors, adjacent to Parking Lot D, will open at 6:30 p.m. and handicapped and special needs guests may disembark at this entrance. 

Commencement speaker Carla Overton holds an associate in science degree in mathematics and science from Jefferson, a bachelor’s degree in human biology, health and society from Cornell University, and a doctor of medicine degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University.  While a college student, Overton studied medicine abroad in the Dominican Republic and in underserved areas of Peru and Costa Rica. She completed a 3-year residency in pediatrics at Update Medical University in 2014 and taught 5th grade students in a low-income area of Baltimore, Maryland through the Teach for America Corps Program. In the community, she volunteers her time at the Samaritan Center and Peds Relief. Among her many student accomplishments at JCC is receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
