JCC to offer Natural Gas Training for Transitioning Military as well as Veterans

A partnership between the Continuing Education Division at Jefferson Community College (JCC) and Fort Drum Soldier for Life will bring Natural Gas Bootcamp, a 6-week career skills provider training program, to JCC’s campus. Geared towards soldiers transitioning out of the military, and veterans, Natural Gas Bootcamp is a program of the New York Troops to Energy Jobs Consortium of the Center for Workforce Development. Training, free of charge, will take place Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning January 9, 2017 through February 18, 2017. Deadline to apply is December 23, 2016.

Training includes a refresher in basic math skills and energy math instruction. Natural Gas Bootcamp, made possible by National Grid, Con Edison and Jefferson Community College, will cover topics including, but not limited to, safety and principles of natural gas, hand and power tools, excavation/backfilling, locating gas structures, piping, print reading, and customer focus. During the program, participants will receive employment assistance from the Center for Energy Workforce Development, Con Edison and National Grid in areas of resume development, interview skills and job search. Starting salary is $24.74 an hour with earning potential of $38.34 an hour.

“This training is a great opportunity for our Fort Drum soldiers, as well as veterans, to prepare for an enticing civilian career with growth potential and benefits with no upfront out of pocket expense,” says Todd Parody, JCC coordinator of community services.

According to National Grid and Con-Edison, their customer base in the New England states alone is expected to grow over 30 million creating upwards of 5,000 new positions not taking into account support positions for infrastructure replacement and improvements.

Fort Drum transitioning solders should register for the Natural Gas Bootcamp through the Fort Drum Soldier for Life office located in Clark Hall, Building P-10720, Mount Belvedere Boulevard or call (315) 786-6566. Veterans may register for the Natural Gas Bootcamp by contacting the JCC Continuing Education Division at (315) 786-2385.

Future funding for this program has been stabilized by a New York State Regional Economic Development Council Department of Labor grant to run the program for subsequent cohorts. The second round for the program will be held in late spring 2017, the third and fourth rounds will be held in fall 2017, and the fifth will be held in spring 2018.
