Sandra Spadoni: Sandra SpadoniSandra Spadoni: Sandra SpadoniJefferson Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sandra L. Spadoni as the newest Dean for Enrollment. The Dean for Enrollment provides strategic and operational leadership for all enrollment functions from student recruitment through the intake process.

In collaboration with the Vice President of Students and the Enrollment Services team, the Dean for Enrollment is responsible for the coordination, integration and supervision of student recruitment and admissions, community and school outreach, financial aid and services, new student advising and registration, and records policies and services. Spadoni comes to JCC with over a decade of collegiate experience in various positions, including international student affairs and student housing.

Most recently, Spadoni served as the director of international student advising at Green River College, a community college near Seattle, Washington. In that position, she hired and supervised a team of six full-time and five part-time professional advising staff in providing relationship-based academic, transfer, career, immigration and personal advising for over 1,700 international students. The advising office focused on nationwide transfer for students, and had a strong track record of helping students transfer to complete their bachelor’s degrees at competitive schools including UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, University of Wisconsin at Madison and Columbia University. Her office saw overall student retention increase by 10 percent within one year of her hire.

“The College is thrilled to welcome Dr. Spadoni to lead the Enrollment Services team,” says Betsy D. Penrose, vice president for students. “Her experience with international students and streamlining enrollment services will strengthen the department. Her doctoral work on Guided Pathways is integral to improving student persistence and graduation rates and we look forward to her involvement in institutional student completion efforts.”

Spadoni has a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service: Culture and Politics from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from American University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Washington Tacoma. The focus of her doctoral research was change management for community colleges seeking to improve advising, retention and completion for students by implementing a more structured Guided Pathways approach to the curriculum and advising.

“JCC is an incredible asset to the region, and I look forward to helping us build on our strengths to serve our students and the community,” said Spadoni. “The SUNY system has a tradition of excellence and innovation, and community colleges such as JCC provide a personalized college experience with small class sizes and dedicated faculty. Tuition is very affordable and now with the Excelsior scholarship and other scholarships JCC is a great deal for students to finish a degree or certificate or transfer on to finish a bachelor’s degree. Students really can go anywhere from here.”

In 2005-2006, Spadoni also worked in Lusaka, Zambia, as a community education intern for the HIV Corps for the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia/University of Alabama. Spadoni worked in the country as a special assistant to the Zambian director of community outreach, and she facilitated HIV workshops and programs for community leaders and support group members.

The new Dean replaces Rosanne N. Weir, who retired from the College in April after 40 years of service. Spadoni’s first day at Jefferson Community College was June 5, 2017.
