Winners of 2017 Writers Contest Announced & NCWF Events

A public reception and writers contest reading will be held on  Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Commons of the John W. Deans Collaborative Learning Center (Building 15) at Jefferson Community College (JCC) to recognize the winners of the 2017 North Country Writers Contest. In August, the JCC English department sought entries for short fiction, essay/nonfiction and poetry.

The 2017 North Country Writers Contest winners are:

  • ShortFiction Winner:  Thornton L. Ray, of Watertown, “The Potholes of Jefferson County”
  • Essay/Nonfiction Winner:  Rhonda M. Foote, of Watertown,  “Following Alice”
  • Poetry Winner:  Laurie L. Petersen, of Redwood, “The Next Exploration”

Michael L. Keck, of Black River, received honorable mention for his poem, “After Retiring.” Keck is a previous writer’s contest poetry winner (2013 and 2016), fiction honorable mention (2016), and nonfiction winner (2016). Megan K. Sprague, of Sandy Creek, received honorable mention for her nonfiction entry, “Fish On.” Christian E. Oblender, of Theresa, received honorable mention for his fiction piece “Salubrious.”

Winning writers were awarded $100 while those receiving honorable mention were awarded $25. Both winning and honorable mention submissions will be published online in October. All three contestants are invited to read their winning entry at the Writers Contest Reading and reception.

The Writers Contest Reading and reception are part of a week-long Writers Festival at JCC to be held Monday, October 23 through Friday, October 27, 2017. The public is invited to participate in the following Writers Festival events:

  • Monday, October 23        Brown Bag Poetry Workshop

  • Tuesday, October 24        Campus Writers Read

                                                   Featuring faculty Christine Grimes, Ray Peterson, Ann Clark-Moore, and

                                                   Eran Eads 12:30-1:50 p.m./ Room 6-002, Jules Center (Building 6)

  • Wednesday, October 25    National Novel Writing Month Kick-off

                                                    Featuring Josh Dickinson

                                                    12:20- 1:15 p.m./Fireside Commons

                                                     Deans Collaborative Learning Center

  • Thursday, October 26       Writers Contest Coffeehouse Reading

                                                    7:00-9:00 p.m. / Fireside Commons

                                                    Author of History of Wolves and Catapult
