JCC Presents Author Leonard Pitts, Jr. on February 8

“United States of Amnesia,” presented by Leonard Pitts, Jr. (above) will examine the question of whether or not America is in denial regarding its racial history, both past and present. Sponsored by the Jefferson Community College Social Science Department, President’s Office, Diversity Committee, Student Activities Office, and Student Government, the event will take place on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the Robert R. and Jean S. Sturtz Theater. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Pitts is a columnist, commentator, and author, but above all a writer. His Miami Herald column appears locally in the Sunday edition of the Watertown Daily Times. He is most known for his column “We’ll Go Forward From This Moment,” an  initial response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

At the age of 19, Pitts earned his college degree in English from the University of Southern California. Throughout his 35-plus-year career, he has received numerous awards and recognition for his work. Just a glimpse of his accomplishments would list the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary; the 2008 Journalist of the Year Award by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ); the 2001 American Society of Newspaper Editors Award for Commentary Writing; and the 2002 Columnist of the Year Award by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Additionally, he is a three-time recipient of the NABJ Award of Excellence. Additionally, he is the author of Grant Park, Freeman, Forward From this Moment, and Before I Forget.
