Part-Time Students Encouraged to Apply for New State-Wide Scholarship by July 27

Jefferson Community College (JCC) is encouraging local part-time students to take advantage of the New York State Part-time Scholarship (PTS) Award Program.

Launched this month, the PTS Award Program is available to individuals seeking to attend a SUNY or CUNY school part-time (between 6 and 11.5 credit hours per semester). Eligibility is based on financial need, and both new and prospective students may apply. The scholarship is designed to expand opportunities to attend college to a much greater population who may otherwise be restricted due to busy work/life schedules. Up to $1,500 per semester may be awarded to a single applicant and the award may be received up to a maximum of four consecutive semesters.

“Additional financial assistance to our part-time students is essential,” said James P. R. Ambrose, director of financial services at Jefferson.  “However, there is a myth that there isn’t as much financial aid for part-time students and that is not always the case. We administer several state and federal programs to help part-time students cover their college expenses. The Jefferson Foundation also offers many scholarships directly for part-time study and adult learners.”

Students are able to receive the PTS award even if they are already receiving financial assistance through other part-time state programs, such as Aid for Part-time Study (APTS). For those who demonstrate the highest financial need, JCC offers Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants as well as Federal Work Study, and both subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Direct Student Loans.

“Many part-time students are over the age of 25 and are trying to work full-time and care for their families, but understand the importance of a college education,” says Sandra L. Spadoni, dean for enrollment. “This new scholarship, along with the many other aid programs, make the cost of higher education easier to handle and we hope will encourage more part-time students to enroll and complete their degrees.”

PTS award eligibility is determined apart from the traditional Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a separate application must be completed for consideration. The deadline to apply for the 2018-2019 academic year is July 27, 2018Apply for the PTS award online.
