Science Division Bestowed 2012 Spirit of Jefferson Award
At the Jefferson Community College (JCC) Annual Recognition Ceremony held on May 4, 2012 the Science Division was bestowed the Spirit of Jefferson Award for its work in creating and sustaining Super Science Saturday (SSS). The science division was one of six nominees.
The Spirit of Jefferson Award was created to recognize a campus team that demonstrates cooperative effort and achieves exemplary results while working on an endeavor that benefits the college and the community, both short and long term.
SSS, held annually in February, showcases Jefferson’s mathematics and science degree programs alongside community organizations for the purpose of stimulating interest in careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Each department within the science division has an exhibit or activity with virtually every science division faculty and staff member taking part along with many students and others from JCC’s campus community. The annual event uses hands on activities and enthralling demonstrations. The first SSS was held in 2008 and continues to grow every year. Nearly 2,000 children and adults attended SSS in 2012.
The Spirit of Jefferson Award was accepted on behalf of the science division by SSS coordinators, Mark D. Irwin and Patricia K. Jaacks, and Linda C. Dittrich, dean for mathematics and science.
The JCC Women’s Organization received the inaugural 2011 Spirit of Jefferson Award.
