Summer Academic Programs to Prepare Students for Fall Semester

Jefferson Community College (JCC) offers three academic support programs during the summer to bring new students up to speed and in some cases even get ahead - STAR (Strategies To Achieve Results) Summer Bridge Program, L.E.A.D. (Learning Encouragement and Academic Development) Program and a Refresher Program.

Summer Bridge, designed to give new incoming students the opportunity to bridge the gap between current academic abilities and college level coursework, consists of classroom lecture; participation in math, information and computer literacy; career exploration; college readiness workshops and field trips. Students who place into Reading 099 or English 099 during the admissions process will benefit from this summer experience by building up their reading and writing skills and getting that important step ahead before the load of a rigorous, fast paced semester begins. Additionally, students will familiarize themselves with the college campus and meet other students. The course work is free! The only cost is for the text book.

To be eligible for the Summer Bridge Program, students must be accepted to JCC and enrolled in a degree program; be in need of academic support; be a United States citizen, permanent resident or naturalized citizen; and meet one of the following criteria: be a first generation student (neither parent nor guardian has earned a bachelor’s degree), have a documented disability, or be a low-income student.

The STAR program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant.

JCC L.E.A.D. and Refresher Programs are designed to assist incoming students with their academic performance in writing, reading and math in order to retake the college placement exam and possibly test out of developmental courses before the fall semester begins.

L.E.A.D. begins Monday, July 9 and wraps up by August 2. The Refresher Program runs June 4 thru June 21. Candidates for both the L.E.A.D. and Refresher Programs must have applied and been accepted to Jefferson and placed into pre-college course work such as Reading-  CLS 090 or CLS 099; Mathematics- MTH 090 or MTH 098; and/or English-  ENG 099.

Students interested in any of JCC’s summer academic support programs should call the JCC STAR office, 315-786-6555, to schedule an appointment to complete an application and interview.  With the assistance of a STAR counselor, students will be matched with the summer program that most compliments his/her academic needs.  Each academic program has its own registration process.
