JCC Holds 47th Commencement Exercises on May 20

Jefferson Community College held its 47th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the McVean Student Center Gymnasium. The commencement exercises were video streamed through the College's website.

Jefferson’s class of 2011 is comprised of 628 students who graduated in December 2010 or are candidates for graduation in May or August of 2011, pending satisfactory completion of coursework. Twelve students will receive two degrees each, bringing the total number of degrees awarded to 640, of which 182 are A.A.S. degrees, 195 are A.A. degrees, 240 are A.S. degrees and 23 are certificates. Nearly 45% of graduates are adult learners, aged 25 years or older. More than 160 students will graduate with an associate of arts degree in liberal arts – humanities and social sciences. Business administration, criminal justice, individual studies and math/science are also popular majors at Jefferson.

Distance learning remains a popular mode of study for many in the class of 2011. More than half (63%) of graduates took at least one online course from Jefferson while 12 degrees were earned completely online.

Fifteen percent of graduates took Jefferson EDGE courses while in high school. Jefferson EDGE is a concurrent enrollment program in which students earn college credit by taking Jefferson classes at their high schools during the regular school day.

Jefferson continues to be a strong educational partner of Fort Drum. Thirty-five percent of this graduating class is comprised of active duty Soldiers and their family members, veterans, retirees or members of the Army Reserves.

The College is privileged that Congressman William L. Owens, representing New York’s 23rd District, will give the keynote address at the commencement exercises.

Congressman Bill Owens began his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives in November of 2009. He graduated summa cum laude from Manhattan College with a degree in business administration with a major in economics and earned his juris doctor from Fordham University Law School in New York City. Bill joined the U.S. Air Force after graduation from law school and served as a Captain at several bases finishing his tour at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. After completing his service in the military, he established his law practice and was the managing partner of Stafford Owens for 25 years, concentrating his practice in the areas of business and tax law. Bill began to work in the 1980s with his community to foster economic development and was part of the team that helped redevelop Plattsburgh Air Force Base after it closed. He also taught business classes as an adjunct instructor at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh. Now, as a member of Congress, Bill is working to continue those efforts and help communities build a successful plan for economic development. Congressman Owens is a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Agriculture Committee, and the House Committee on Small Business, along with the Congressional Northern Border Caucus, which he co-chairs, and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus.

The student commencement speaker is Nolan R.K. Bodah of Watertown. Nolan will graduate from Jefferson Community College with an associate of science degree in mathematics and science.

Nolan began his studies at Jefferson in 2009 after graduating from Watertown High School. Nolan was a pitcher and infielder for the Cannoneers intercollegiate baseball team and an exemplary scholar athlete who has earned President’s List honors each semester he has completed at Jefferson. As a participant in the Honors Program, Nolan completed a research study in sociology, two laboratory research studies in organic chemistry, and two laboratory research studies in general physics. He is a member of the Tau Xi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society.

Always willing to lend a hand to help others, Nolan recruited fellow members of the baseball team to volunteer on a weekend to help construct a memorial playground in memory of a classmate’s child. On campus, he has assisted other students as a peer tutor for a variety of chemistry classes. In the community, Nolan is a member of the Watertown Lions Club.

This summer, Nolan plans to conduct independent study and research with JCC chemistry professor Dr. Venkat Chebolu. In the fall, he will transfer to Binghamton University where he will study psychobiology/behavioral neuroscience. Ultimately, Nolan plans to become a dentist.

During the commencement ceremony, four members of the JCC community will be recognized as recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. The Chancellor’s Awards recognize extraordinary achievement and encourage the continuation of excellence. Paul A. Alteri of Watertown, assistant professor of criminal justice, was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Linda C. Dittrich of Watertown, dean for the science division, was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Professional Service. Lynn M. Sprott of Watertown, associate professor of psychology, was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Suzanne W. Wadhams of Chaumont, systems analyst in the College’s computer center, was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. Chancellor’s Award honorees received their medallions at the College’s Recognition Ceremony held on May 6.

Additionally, two graduates will be recognized for receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence earlier this year. This award acknowledges students who have best demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives: community service, athletics, creative and performing arts, leadership and career achievement. In April, Gunjan V. Udeshi and Stacey L. Upton, both of Watertown, were chosen by SUNY for the 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

Gunjan graduated from Jefferson with an associate of science degree in business administration in December 2010. She earned President’s List honors each semester at Jefferson and was vice president of Jefferson’s Tau Xi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. In April, Gunjan was named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-New York Academic Team.

While at Jefferson, Gunjan was a campus orientation guide, active in the Business Club and was a member of the Lady Cannoneers intercollegiate basketball team on which she served as one of three captains. A devoted volunteer, she helped on campus with the biannual blood drive, cultural fair, and the end-of-the-year banquet, and off campus at a local retirement community, child care center, Habitat for Humanity and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Gunjan transferred to Binghamton University where she is studying finance.

Stacey Upton will graduate with an associate of science degree in human services. She has been named to the President’s List each semester at Jefferson and is a member of the Tau Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. While at Jefferson, Stacey has assisted in the Welcome Center as both a shadow guide and as a student ambassador and she served as secretary of the Human Services Club. In the community, Stacey assisted in the development and implementation of a Parent/Teacher Guild at Immaculate Heart Central Junior/Senior High School and is a dedicated volunteer for Hospice. She plans to transfer to Keuka College and pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work on Jefferson’s campus through JCC’s Higher Education Center initiative.

Christopher D. Coles of Evans Mills, along with Ms. Udeshi, will be recognized at commencement for being named to the All-New York Academic Team for Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for community colleges. To be chosen for the All-New York academic team, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.25 and have a history of scholarly achievement and outstanding service to campus or community.

Chris will graduate from Jefferson with an associate of arts degree in liberal arts - humanities and social sciences. He has been named to the Dean’s or President’s List for each semester he has attended Jefferson and is president of Jefferson’s Tau Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Chris has also completed JCC’s Honors Program and Honors Seminar, which provides an individualized and enriched learning opportunity for academically motivated students.

While at Jefferson, Chris has been extremely active in Student Government (SG). He serves on the SG Advisory Board and Budget/Finance Committee, and is a member of the newly created Street Team which promotes events on campus. He is a member of the Faculty Student Association Board of Directors and represents students on the Honors Committee. Chris plans to pursue a degree in physical education at SUNY Cortland this fall.

The Jefferson Community College Honors Program offers students with exceptional academic skills the opportunity to receive enriched instruction and six graduating students have completed this program. Honors program students elect three courses and enhance them as Honors Options by choosing a project for each and working directly with a faculty member to provide a unique and rewarding educational experience. Graduating with Honors Program designation are the following students: Nolan R.K. Bodah, Watertown, associate of science degree in mathematics and science; Christopher D. Coles, Evans Mills, associate of arts degree in liberal arts - humanities and social sciences; Alyena C. Crimmins, Clayton, associate of arts degree in humanities and social sciences and associate of science degree in criminal justice; Michelle Fatta, Fort Drum, associate of science degree in human services; and Stacey L. Upton, Watertown, associate of science degree in human services.

Additionally, college president Carole A. McCoy and Daniel J. Villa, chair of the Jefferson Community College Board of Trustees, will honor Jefferson’s nine-member Founding Board of Trustees with the 2011 Jefferson Citation. Appointed by the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors were Carl O. Bachman, Miller F. Moran, Floyd F. Peckham, Arnold R. Shapiro, and Paula V. V. Wardwell. Appointed by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller were Margaret N. Cosgrove, Philip R. Fortune, D. William O’Donnell, and Robert S. Rhodes. Receiving the Jefferson Citation during commencement will be Mrs. Wardwell of Sackets Harbor and Mr. Shapiro of Maryland. Family members will accept the award on behalf of Mr. Bachman, Mr. Moran, Mr. Peckham, Mrs. Cosgrove, Mr. Fortune, Mr. O’Donnell and Mr. Rhodes, all of whom are honored posthumously. The Jefferson Citation was established by the Jefferson Community College Board of Trustees to “recognize an individual or organization whose leadership and actions have demonstrated outstanding commitment to education and the vision and mission of Jefferson Community College.”
