Thomas Finch Named JCC Vice President for Academic Affairs

Jefferson Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas J. Finch, Saranac Lake, to the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs. Mr. Finch comes to Jefferson with twenty five years in higher education with experience as both an administrator and faculty member.  He currently serves as executive vice president of academics at Utica (N.Y.) School of Commerce.  

As vice president for academic affairs at Jefferson, Mr. Finch will be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of all academic programs and for the overall supervision of instructional personnel. He will also serve as the liaison to the Office of the Provost at the State University of New York (SUNY) and will chair the College’s academic council.  As chief academic officer, Mr. Finch is integral to strategic planning and development as well as to Jefferson’s accreditation process. 

Mr. Finch brings extensive experience in all areas of academic affairs, with SUNY Administration and with Middle States accreditation. At Utica School of Commerce, Tom is responsible for all academic matters at the main campus in Utica as well as two branch campuses in Oneonta and Canastota.He oversees faculty, assessment, curriculum development, accreditation, academic advising and student scheduling, transfer and articulation agreements, and the concurrent enrollment program at area high schools.   Previously, Tom was the vice president for academic affairs at North Country Community College (NCCC), where he also provided oversight for non-credit as well credit programming and served as the College’s liaison with SUNY System Administration, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

In addition to his significant administrative experience, Tom has teaching experience as a full time faculty member and as an adjunct instructor of a variety of accounting and management courses.  Since 1997, Mr. Finch has served as a program reviewer for NYSED and participated in several institutional reviews for the New York State Board of Regents. He has been involved in numerous professional and community organizations and committees including the Regional Workforce Investment Board, Griffiss Air Force Base Re-Training Committee, SUNY Chief Academic Officer Organization, SUNY Committee for Seamless Transfer, NCCC Foundation, Rotary International, Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education, and the United Way of Otsego County.   

Mr. Finch holds an associate of applied science degree in accounting from SUNY Cobleskill and both bachelor of science and a master of science degrees in business education from SUNY Albany.

Jefferson’s current vice president for academic affairs, Edward J. Knapp, is retiring on June 30. Mr. Finch will join Jefferson on July 11, 2011.
