JCC to Honor Distinguished Alumni at Ceremony Apr. 27

Jefferson Community College (JCC) Alumni Association has announced the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients for 2011. These awards honor Jefferson alumni who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to one or more areas of society—professional, academic, community, or service to Jefferson Community College.

Honorees

Jeff D. Perrine, Class of 2008—Rising Star Award

Jeff Perrine, Watertown, holds an associate’s degree in nursing from Jefferson and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Excelsior College. He is currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University. Perrine, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces medic, is an emergency room nurse manager at River Hospital in Alexandria Bay.

Robert A. Myers, Class of 1980—Professional Achievement Award

After graduating from Jefferson with his associate’s degree in science laboratory technology, Robert Myers was employed as a lab technician by the company now known as Bristol-Myers Squibb. While maintaining full-time employment, Myers continued his education, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Syracuse University. Promoted numerous times throughout his career, Myers now serves as the associate director of global labeling operations at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Connecticut, where his responsibilities include writing and maintaining a compendium of safety information for assigned drugs.

MaryLu Moriarty, Class of 1981—Distinguished Service Award

MaryLu Moriarty, Lacona, holds an associate’s degree in business administration from JCC, a bachelor’s degree from Clarkson University, and a master’s degree from SUNY Oswego. Moriarty serves on the board of directors for Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, Ariang, Inc., and is past president of the Ontario Center for the Performing Arts and Oswego Players. Currently Moriarty is president of the Jefferson Community College Alumni Association board of directors and an adjunct instructor at JCC while also enrolled full-time at Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage. Prior to pursuing her massage license, Moriarty taught business courses full-time at JCC for eight years.

Karen A. Carr, Class of 2000—Jeffersonian Award

Karen Carr, Watertown, earned her associate’s degree in business administration from Jefferson and a bachelor’s degree in business management and economics from SUNY Empire State College. Carr was honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 1998. She is president of the Jefferson County Chapter of the American Association of University Women and a member of the Jefferson Leadership Institute class of 1995. As assistant to the college president at JCC, Carr has served the college for more than twenty years.

John W. Deans—Honorary Alumnus

Dr. Deans’ distinguished career at Jefferson spanned 35 years and began with his appointment to the teaching faculty in 1967. In 1984 he was promoted to academic dean and in 1992 he was inaugurated as the College’s third president. Deans retired in 2002, at which time he was honored with President Emeritus recognition. Deans is recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Israel A. Shapiro Citizenship Award, North Country Citation conferred by St. Lawrence University, and the Jefferson Citation by Jefferson Community College. He is an executive committee member of both the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization and the Northern New York Community Foundation. Dr. Deans holds a holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree from SUNY Albany.
