JCC Testing Site for Credit by Exam Programs—DSST & CLEP

Jefferson Community College (JCC) is a new testing site for DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) and will begin administering monthly exams in October. DSST is an American Council on Education approved credit by exam program that provides the opportunity for students to earn college credit for what they have already learned through on-the-job training, professional development, military service, independent study, prior course work, cultural pursuits, internships, etc.

DSST is offered in 38 subjects and administered through computer-based (with the exception of Public Speaking) and paper-based exams. Disciplines include Math, Social Sciences, Humanities, Business, Physical Science, and Technology. Students take DSST for a variety of reasons. Some take advanced courses sooner by satisfying proficiency requirements and skipping introductory courses. Others take DSST to satisfy college requirements and shorten the time it takes to earn a college degree, thus saving money on tuition and fees. It is not necessary to be enrolled in college to take a DSST test.

There are nearly 2,000 colleges and universities that grant credit for DSST, but each institution sets its own standards for which exams it awards credit for, the scores required, and how much credit will be granted. Jefferson Community College provides credit for successful scores on all 38 DSST exams and JCC students may apply a total of 30 credits earned through DSST testing.

DSST testing will be offered at JCC’s Learning and Success Center on a monthly basis beginning October 2, 2010. Each exam costs $100 ($80 for the exam plus a $20 administration fee). The fee for active duty, reserve, or National Guard service members is $20 (administration fee only) with military ID and a second form of government-issued photo ID.

Additionally, JCC continues to be an approved testing site for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. Both DSST and CLEP exams award college credit, but CLEP exam topics are academic subject-based, while DSST exams topics are more career-oriented.
