Jefferson’s Jazz Rock Students Perform May 11

Jazz enthusiasts will reminisce about the 1920s Big Band era when the Jefferson Community College (JCC) jazz rock ensemble fills Sturtz Theater with the sounds of Chuck Berry and Hoagy Carmichael on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is free and the public is invited to attend.

The jazz rock ensemble is under the direction of Steven B. Lester, adjunct instructor at JCC. Lester, of Sackets Harbor, began teaching at Jefferson in the Fall of 2009. After having served 22 years as a guitarist in the U.S. Army bands, Lester retired from the 10th Mountain Division in 2007. While at Fort Drum, he directed the 18-member jazz ensemble for three years and led a jazz combo in a performance at a private luncheon for then-Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Lester holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Salisbury University, Maryland and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Penn State University.

The JCC jazz rock ensemble is a credit-bearing humanities course open to all students. The ensemble is comprised of instrumental and vocal talent. The May 11 concert is the first public performance the group has presented.
