Jefferson Community College is pleased to announce that Katherine F. Fenlon, retired vice president for academic affairs and a former professor at Jefferson, will give the keynote address at the College’s 46th commencement exercises on Friday, May 21. Mrs. Fenlon retired in 2008 after a thirty-year career of service to Jefferson Community College.

Originally from the Rochester area, Mrs. Fenlon joined Jefferson in 1978 as an English instructor and subsequently attained the rank of full professor in 1993. During her tenure as Jefferson’s chief academic officer, the College incorporated alternative methods of instruction, including distance learning, online coursework and hybrid courses, and flexible scheduling for students impacted by military deployment.

In the community, Mrs. Fenlon has lent her time and expertise to many local organizations and has served on the board of directors for Samaritan Medical Center, Literacy of Northern New York, Jefferson-Lewis Workforce Investment Board, Watertown Rotary Club, and the United Way of Northern New York. As an educator and resident of Copenhagen, Mrs. Fenlon has participated in the Copenhagen Central School District Shared Decision-Making Committee.

Her integrity, dedication to her profession, and leadership in the community and her role as a positive mentor and role model for women earned Mrs. Fenlon the prestigious AthenaÒ Award from the Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce in 2007. Additionally, she was named an honorary alumnus in 2008 by the Jefferson Community College Alumni Association.

Ms. Fenlon holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from St. Lawrence University and a master of arts degree in English literature from Brown University.
