A professional in the accounting field examines, analyzes, and interprets accounting data for the purpose of giving advice and preparing financial statements. The analyses and reports are relied upon by individuals and organizations to make financial decisions. Further responsibilities may include recording transactions, preparing financial statements, and preparing state and federal income tax returns or other reports. People in accounting perform many other tasks important to management, such as budgeting and controlling costs.  With additional education and/or work experience, graduates may find employment as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Comptroller, or Controller. How to begin your career path at Jefferson:

Jefferson Community College can help link you to a career in the accounting field through its Associate of Science degree in Accounting.  Although one might also find this degree helpful as a preparation for entry-level employment in the field, this degree’s primary purpose is to prepare students to transfer to a four year college to complete a Bachelor’s degree.  Therefore, in addition to accounting courses, a student will be enrolled in business, economics, math (both statistics and algebra) and liberal arts courses necessary for transfer.  Students should work closely with their faculty advisor and transfer/career counselors regarding transfer planning.   Popular Bachelor’s degree programs for transfer include SUNY Plattsburgh, Franklin University, SUNY Oswego, and Le Moyne College.  Also refer to JCC’s A.A.S. Accounting degree and Accounting Certificate.
