The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection for testing purposes. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the healthcare system including in hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMO’s, public health facilities, veteran hospitals, insurance carriers, and in other healthcare settings. The demand for phlebotomy technicians has increased substantially with the overall complexity of healthcare services and the risks of infectious disease. Current healthcare industry experts predict a 15% increase in phlebotomy jobs by 2024.

Limited Funding for Summer 2024: The Rural Healthcare Training Grant offers a scholarship of up to $2,000 toward tuition for certain students. Students who may be eligible for this grant funding include veteran or spouses of veterans enrolled in Summer 2024 Phlebotomy Technician course. MyCAA funding may apply for qualified individuals. Note MyCAA scholarship will NOT pay for the textbooks. Textbook expenses will be the financial responsibility of the student. For this course, textbook cost is $150. MyCAA Education and Training Plans (ETPs) must be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to the training start date to MyCAA for consideration for funding within the training program.

Army Credentialing Assistance (CA) Program may apply for qualified individuals. 
Note: To be eligible to use CA for Summer Phlebotomy Technician Training, start date June 25, 2024, and end date September 24, 2024, the Soldier must have an ETS no earlier than October 25, 2024, and must submit the Credentialing Assistance Request (CAR) between March 27, 2024 - May 11, 2024.

This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares learners to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.  Learners will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.  

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the steps in selected specimen collection procedures performed by the phlebotomy technician
  • Explain the safety procedures in the healthcare setting and specifically in performing specimen collection procedures
  • Identify specific supplies and equipment used in selected specimen collection procedures
  • Explain precautions and guidelines when collecting specimens in special populations such as pediatrics and geriatrics
  • Define quality of care and explain the impact on patient medical care when quality and safety are compromised in phlebotomy procedures
  • Describe the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology associated with phlebotomy
  • Describe the requirements of the successful phlebotomy career including desired character traits, training and education, roles and responsibilities
  • Explain how phlebotomists communicate with others in the healthcare setting verbally, nonverbally, within the health record, and using computer systems
  • Identify common legal issues, ethical issues, and regulatory issues commonly impacting the phlebotomist

Certification Opportunities

After completing this program, learners will have the option to take the leading national/industry-recognized certification exam essential to entry-level employment in this fast-growing field. Exam voucher expense will be the financial responsibility of the student.

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.  As learners progress through their program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.

Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility. Any additional expenses incurred for the optional externship will be the financial responsibility of the student. 


Disclosure: In partnership with Jefferson Community College, this program will be fully delivered by Condensed Curriculum International (CCI). CCI is headquartered at 214 Little Falls Road Fairfield, NJ 07004. There are no additional costs students are expected to incur as a result of enrolling in the educational program.

Therefore, for online training start date June 30, 2024, and end date December 30, 2024, the Soldier must have an ETS no earlier than January 30, 2025, and must submit the CAR between April 1, 2024 - May 16, 2024.

Program Description

This course will give you a comprehensive overview of working as a phlebotomist. During this phlebotomist training course, you will learn about drawing blood from patients and blood donors, evaluating patients' ability to withstand the procedure, and helping them feel comfortable. You will learn how to properly explain the blood-drawing procedure to patients and the importance of answering their queries. In this online phlebotomy course, you will also be introduced to performing basic point-of-care testing, such as reading blood glucose levels and preparing blood, urine, and other specimens for testing, along with maintaining medical equipment such as needles, test tubes, and blood vials.

The asynchronous, online phlebotomy certification course includes simulation experience through the inclusion of a lab kit for assignments and aligned simulations for practice. You will have access to videos outlining procedures and "how to's" that allow for firsthand practice as expected in real-world scenarios. This CPT certification course will also provide you with comprehensive, all-inclusive training, which will assist you in pursuing a new career as a phlebotomy technician and includes a complimentary exam voucher to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) upon eligibility.

The course also includes an opportunity to participate in an optional clinical externship.

Certification Opportunities

After completing this program, learners will have the option to take the industry-recognized NHA certification exam. To sit for the NHA CPT certification exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent. It is recommended you have this before enrolling in this program. In addition, for NHA certification, you must successfully complete the required number of venipunctures and dermal punctures. Certification exams offered by NHA are only available online to candidates located in the US.

This course does not meet state requirements for students intending to work in California. Ensure that the Certified Phlebotomy Technician course meets your state's requirements.

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity, also referred to as a clinical experience, to gain valuable hands-on experience.  Students can begin researching the steps of the application process two weeks before completing courses. The clinical experience will be coordinated around your schedule and the company's schedule for you do your hands on training. You will work with an ed2go externship coordinator to setup the experience.

Disclaimer: To qualify for the clinical experience application process, students must complete the online course successfully and have account balances up to date (at a minimum). Going through the clinical experience application process does not guarantee a placement. However, affiliated partnerships increase the likelihood of finding a site that matches student needs.
